Advent always begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas or the Sunday closest to St. Andrew’s Day, beginning on November each year and ending on Christmas Day – thus lasting 4 weeks. Advent Day can start from December 3, 2023
Eastern churches undergo a period of abstinence and penance known as Christmas Lent to prepare for the birth of Jesus on December 25.
What is the Meaning of Advent?
Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas, is celebrated to commemorate Christ’s coming into the world.
The Nativity Fast lasts 40 days, during which time they focus on the Annunciation and glorification of Jesus Christ and his incarnation – made flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. Thus Jesus Christ became both God and man.

First Advent Candle
The first candle represents a bright light in anticipation of the coming of Christ. It is usually a purple candle and can be called a divination candle. It refers to God’s forgiveness of man’s sins. Purple is traditionally the most prominent of the Advent candle colors. It is the color of the liturgical cloth used for clothing and is associated with prayer, contemplation, repentance and faith.
Second Advent Candle
The second candle, or Bethlehem candle, is usually purple or violet in color. It reminds us of the experience of the Holy Family in Bethlehem. The color of the Second Advent candle is associated with royalty and reminds us that Christ is the “King of kings.” We are waiting for a new King to come from Bethlehem.
Third Advent Candle
The third candle is the shepherd’s candle, as we remember rejoicing at the birth of Christ like the shepherds on the first Christmas Eve. It is also called Gaudet Sunday from the Latin Philippians 4:4,5, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” The third candle is usually pink or rose colored. Pink is associated with joy, and on the third Sunday of Advent we repent for the celebration of the coming birth of Christ.
Fourth Advent Candle
The last Advent candle marks the beginning of the last week before Christmas and is a time for prayer. It is also known as the Angel’s Candle and is a white candle that represents the purity, peace and justice that Christ brought to the world. The white candle reminds us that Christ is sinless and pure.
